Assessment for Learning

Assessment for Learning or formative assessment as it is sometimes referred to, is integral to the Junior Cycle and at the forefront of modern education. Castlepollard Community College makes a considered effort to incorporate Assessment for Learning into all lessons to support student learning.

What is AFL(Assessment for Learning)?

Definition: Assessment for Learning is the process of seeking and interpreting evidence for use by learners and their teachers to decide where the learners are in their learning, where they need to go and how best to get there. Assessment for Learning is also known as formative assessment.

It supports the notion that learning is a journey. Teachers provide the signposts on this journey through feedback and assessment whilst a student uses motivation, resilience and knowledge to reach the end of the journey.

What does an AFL classroom look like?

A classroom in which AFL is present is a vibrant one which encourages collaboration and effective communication between students and the teacher along with enlightening communication between the students themselves.

What are the benefits of AFL?

Students take a more active role in their learn and thus become owners of their learning. Students also learn to learn as they understand how to ask for help. Through the use of success criteria in Castlepollard Community College, students are always aware of their goals in class and are motivated to reach them.

Overall, AFL creates a supportive learning environment in which students have the tools to reach their potential.
