That winning feeling!
22nd September 2016
It has been a fantastic week this week in terms of ladies sport at Castlepollard Community College. On Wednesday the ladies U16 Gaelic football team took part in their first game of the season. Team manager, Ms Harrison had her side well-drilled for the season opener following a flurry of enjoyable training sessions throughout September.
A talented Ard Scoil Padraig side provided the opposition as both sides were hoping to make a mark early in the competition. The side has been bolstered by the arrival of a group of talented first year players to add to the outstanding group of players in the college already.
The first half was a tense affair as both sides battled hard for a claim on the possession. Castlepollard controlled a lot of possession apart from a damaging 5 minute period when Granard managed to hit the net on more than one occasion.
The home side can thank the efforts of Sara Guinan who found the net on two occasions in the first half, along with her first year colleague, Ciara Keague who also managed to find the net, keeping Castlepollard in touch with the visitors. With the scores at 5-5 to 4-3 in favour of the away side, Castlepollard had a lot to do in the second half to regain a foothold in the game.
The Castlepollard players showed great character to take a hold of the game in the second half and not only draw level but exert their dominance on the game, claiming a large advantage on the scoreboard. Shannon Reilly put in a player of the match performance driving her team forward when it mattered. The all-important score came early in the second half from yet another first year player as Rachel O’Neill found the net not long after the restart.
Fanastic performances from Hannah O’Neill and Ciara Smyth at the back along with the tough-tackling Rebecca Smyth meant the team from Granard found it hard to break through out resilient defence. Kirsty Fivey must also be commended on her persistent efforts throughout the tie.
Well done to all involved and best of luck in the next game!
