Sixth Year Ag Science Trip
9th October 2018
Recently our sixth year Ag. Science students ventured out of the classroom and into the field to visit the farm of the Gibson-Brabazon Family in Loughanavalley. The morning started out with a thorough introduction of their mixed farming enterprise with special emphasis on their tillage operation. Here we were guided through the cultivation and husbandry of spring barley where we inspected all the various machinery used in the process and gathered up-to-date information required to complete our crop project. After this, we took a trip down the fields to observe the sowing of winter oats and discussed the benefits of the min-till seed bed preparation and examined the one-pass system used. To witness the work in action and speak to professionals is a great oppurtunity to consolidate the material we learn in class and gives an insight into the everyday aspects of our agricultural industry in Ireland. Thanks to the Gibson-Brabazons for hosting this informative and enjoyable farm visit.
