Castlepollard students wow judges with SciFest School science fair!

On Wednesday 25th January 80 students from 1st and 2nd year participated in the inaugural SciFest@School science fair. Students presented projects on areas from cricket behaviour to wirelessly controlling lights on a trailer.

Judges on the day included Dr. David Casey, forensic scientist with the Dept. of Justice, Sheila Porter, CEO of SciFest Ltd., and Orla Concannon from Mergon International, which is based in Castlepollard.

The judges were full of praise for the students, commenting particularly on their ability to present their projects, their knowledge of the Scientific Method and their confidence in answering questions.

Nine groups were chosen to go forward to the regional final in Athlone Institute of Technology in April where they will be up against schools from across the midlands and compete for prizes from international companies like Boston Scientific and Intel.

The top three projects were as follows:

1st place: Clarissa Harmon, Orla McKenna & Ciara Smyth, Which cleaning sprays are better of the environment?

2nd place: Ryan Nea, Bee Detector Device

3rd place: Sinead Clarke, Saorise Butler & Mikala Flynn, Wireless light.

Well done to all participants!
