Public Speaking Success at Soroptimist Ireland Competition
24th November 2019
Over the past three years, public speaking has become a strong part of the extra-curricular programme here at Castlepollard Community College. Success in this area has now followed. Last year, sixth year student Kerry Cassidy was selected to represent the Mullingar region in the Leinster competition after success in the Bloomfield Hotel.
This year, five girls took part in the Soroptimist Competition on Wednesday evening last in the Bloomfield. The competition this year was even more intense as 20 girls took to the podium to impressively annouce their views on a range of topics. Our five students, Kerry Cassidy, Sinead Clarke, Rebecca O'Keeffe, Clarissa Harmon and Saoirse Butler were outstanding on the night. Three students, Clarissa, Sinead and Saoirse were competing in their first event and did both themselves and the school proud as they passionately spoke about environmentalism and the empowerment of women. Kerry Cassidy once again displayed her credentials as a skilled public speaker with her talk on Education.
On the night however, Rebecca O'Keeffe in sixth year provided the speech which led to her selection to represent the Mullingar region in the Leinster Finals in Drogheda in January. Rebecca was competing in the competition for the second time having started public speaking last year. Her development has been exceptional and her achievement on the night comes as no surprise. Rebecca's speech on education was both inspiring and thought-provoking. Well done to Rebecca from all the staff and students at Castlepollard Community College. Best of luck in the next round!
