First competitive success in Hockey
22nd September 2016
Here at Castlepollard Community College we are always pushing to add more outlets for our students to flourish. This can be clearly seen in the sporting field and most recently through the efforts of Ms Leonard and Ms Kiernan as they established the new hockey team.
Having put the hours in last year through training and a range of friendlies against some tough opposition, it was clear the team was ready for competitive action this year. The results last year were encouraging, however no one would have expected the amazing start to the season from our senior team.
Having been assigned a tough opening test against an established and well-seasoned Ursuline College side from Sligo, the odds were certainly stacked against our ladies as they took the long journey to Sligo.
Not only did the Castlepollard Ladies hold their own in the face of such strong opposition, they managed to pull off their first competitive win. Thanks to Lauren Fitzsimons' goal, Castlepollard enjoyed a 0-1 win to get their campaign off to the best possible start. Third year student Emma Lancaster put in a player of the match performance whilst Megan D’arcy must also be commended for her influence on the game. Katie Sheehan also contributed to the win, keeping a clean sheet between the posts for the Castlepollard side.
A tough tie against Taylor’s Hill from Galway awaits the ladies in the next game. Let’s hope they continue to defy the odds on their path to glory this season. Well done to all involved!
