All-Ireland Award for TY students
7th March 2017
Having been nominated for a place in the final of the Briery Gap Drama Festival, expectations were high for the TY production of Big Maggie. Students involved in every aspect of play were back to work again as props had to be cleaned up and repainted along with a returns to even more detailed rehearsals under the guidance of Ms Leonard, Mr Jordan and Mr Mills.
The final took place in the familiar setting of the Mullingar Arts Centre on Saturday afternoon last. Placed among 12 other fantastic productions, the standard of performance was very high as schools traveled from as far away as Cork and Donegal to take part in the final. Castlepollard Community College were the only representatives from the midlands but they did the area proud with their most impressive performance of the key scene from the play yet. Several in attendance noted improvements from the already accomplished performances they had seen before Christmas.
After a long wait and several enjoyable performances, the judges returned with their decision just before 10pm that evening. As the college was not announced among the runners-up, expectations grew and sure enough, Castepollard Community College was announced as the Best Newcomer, taking home the Briery Gap Perpetual Cup in honour of the fantastic achievement.
Staging Big Maggie has been a long journey and would not have been the success it was without the relentless efforts of the talented cast and backstage crew but also all the teachers who helped with various aspects of the production, especially Ms Leonard who saw the project through from beginning to end with tremendous dedication.
Well done again to all involved!
